  • Find the sentence/s  in the text that explains the impact that whaling and sealing had on Maori in New Zealand? Copy and Paste below.
After Cook’s voyages, a steady flow of Europeans arrived in New Zealand, getting involved in a range of diverse activities; trading, and gold mining, to whaling and sealing. These interactions between British and Maori, while creating moments of peaceful trade, also caused fights and arguments, particularly due to the trade of firearms (guns called muskets)(see left). The presence of whalers and sealers, living along the coast, left a great impact on Maori communities.

  • “The Treaty of Waitangi signaled the start of British sovereignty over New Zealand” What does this mean?

Research any unfamiliar words, and discuss with your partner before answering.

When my partner and I discussed it we found out the reason and what we think it is. I think this means that the British took authority over new Zealand when the Maori signed the treaty.

  • Cartography or map-making was a very important part of any European voyage. In your own words, how do you think it was done? How were maps made?
I think maps were made by hand and painting but I also have another reason on how maps were made. My second reason is about why I think Maps are very important to James Cook. I think it’s important to James Cook because he’s an explorer and he needs to use maps to discover new lands and discover new things.

  • Whaling is an industry that still causes problems today – do you think we should be hunting whales? Why or why not?
For me it’s good to be whaling because if you catch a whale and finish it off you can get any type of vitamins. You can get vitamin A or B which can help people.
